5月3日 2009 Sauders Quilt ShowWe all piled in the car and drove to Sauders Saturday for the quilt show. Everyone had tickets this year because EVERYONE entered a quilt. I was the only one to get a ribbon and I got TWO of them this year. I don't have a picture of the one I entered that received a Third Place but the Challenge quilt that received the Honorable mention is pictured here. That show has become so competitive in recent years and the quilts so awesome I was sure I would never ever get any ribbons again. This year was a very good year. Yes, a VERY good year. The challenge quilt category is to use fabrics of their choice and we could only use squares or rectangles then embellish to our liking. This one I called "Star Trekkin' " for the brown path that circles around the stars. The stars are paper pieced log cabin blocks and the blocks are actually different sizes to "warp" the shape of the stars.
I had seen this done on one of the quilt shows on TV years ago and couldn't find anything on it anywhere for a pattern. I ended up drawing up my own blocks in Paint Box to the sizes I needed and going from there. I've been doing the Challenge at Sauders for several years now and gripe about the work and time it takes but it stretches my imagination and forces me to work outside my comfort zone. Getting a ribbon is a bonus to the beautiful quilt I wouldn't otherwise have if I hadn't tried. It will proudly hang in the living room where I can gloat and stare at it for awhile. lolol
4月11日 Kathy's Necktie QuiltI finally finished Kathy's necktie quilt after almost two years. It got set aside for some time then I got back to it and finished it this March 2009. There is also a roll pillow I made with the extra blocks I had left over. I couldn't throw any of them out or use them anywhere else. They all came from neckties Kathy saved after her Father died a few years ago. The picture shows her getting her first look at the finished quilt. She was so excited. She just loves it and I am so happy to have done this for her. It was a joy and a challenge. Spiral Quilt Class3月29日 Hail in March!!??I could hardly believe my eyes this afternoon. I heard something hit the kitchen window. Looked out and it was raining hail the size of peas. In March. This didn't just happen once but three times it hailed. Then spit snow in between times just for fun. Come on sunshine and warm temps. You are long over due. 3月18日 Spring is here--hopefullyIt's been a few weeks now and no snow. Maybe spring is coming. Hubby has been outside cleaning the sticks and leaves off the yard. The mud is drying up a little so the dogs aren't dragging so much of it in the house anymore. Had our first 70 degree day this week. Boy did that feel nice being outside without a jacket. This winter was the coldest snowiest we've had in a long time--at least since the blizzard of 78 at least.
Since it was so rotten outside I managed to get the scrap quilt off the frame and finished. It's not a prize winner but it's going to Sauders Quilt Fair this year anyways. It'll go on our bed once I get it back. I'm also in the middle of finishing a wall hanging for their quilt challenge. Don't think it'll be a prize winner either but at the very least I'll have another beautiful quilt to hang somewhere.
Hubby turned 60 years old in February. I threw him a totally surprising birthday party with guests and cake and all the trimmings due a 60 year old. lol He did not suspect a thing. Our son, my Mom, & Keith were the first to arrive so he didn't suspect much until other people started arriving. He didn't have a chance to get mad or anything. So it was a fun afternoon and we got to see some people we hadn't seen in a long time.
Mom & I signed up for a quilt class at Sauders to make a spiral quilt with Jan McKenna teaching the class. I've got mine as far as I can go until the next class when we finish it and it's looking rather nice if I do say so myself. I'll post a picture of it when I get it further along.
I'm working straight midnights this year. It's so tiring and I'm not sleeping well either. Short of asking the doctor for sleeping pills I don't know what else to do. Only nine more months on this schedule. Maybe I can work something else the next year and then it's retirement time. Woooooooohoooooooooooo!!!!!!! Finished twenty-five years in this place the end of 2008. City had a dinner for all us employees who have worked 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 years and each of us got an award. I got a nice little desk clock with a plaque on the front. Have it sitting up in my sewing room/loft where I can see it.
Well, guess it's time to go. Nothing happening in my life except work, eat, and sleep. Luv. |
